President Trump has announced a new branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, intended to address military threats in outer space. On Thursday, Vice President Pence outlined new details about the proposed Space Force, including the fact that it will be established by 2020. The Space Force will become the sixth branch of the Armed Forces and will be led initially by a civilian who reports to the Secretary of Defense. Trump has called space "a war-fighting domain just like land and air and sea," and Pence emphasized that other countries, including Russia and China, have begun to develop space technology that could be weaponized.

Although some are in favor of the new Space Force, others argue that it is overly expensive and that we should focus our attention on more pressing domestic issues. Additionally, some have said that space warfare in the near future is far-fetched. Others have also criticized the vagueness and lack of detail in Trump's plans regarding the Space Force. Some also argue that the United States' actions and percieved aggression could set off an arms race in space, particularly since Trump has called for not only an "American presence" in space, but "American dominance."

I personally have mixed feelings about this. I think we should take care not to be blindsided by Russian or Chinese space technology, but I also think we should not be overly aggressive in order to avoid a potential arms race. I do worry about the costs involved, and I think that more detail from Trump's administration is necessary to form a full opinion. What are thoughts on this?
