Should Illegal Immigrants be able to Vote?

Section two of article two in the California State Constitution states, “A United States citizen 18 years of age and resident in this State must vote.”  That is congruent with U.S. law that requires American citizenship to vote in any local or federal elections.  However, a district in California (District 7) supervisor, Normal Yee is calling for a change: “We want to give immigrants the right to vote.”

California is a sanctuary state and has a Democratic majority in the state legislature.  Some, such as Newt Gingrich (the author of this article), believe the Democratic push for immigrant voting has calculated reasoning behind it.  That is, allowing immigrants to vote will in turn increase votes for the Democratic party and allow them to more easily acquire positions in their respective offices.  Recently, an editorial article by Cal Thomas reported that just 18 Democrats voted for a “recent Congressional resolution voicing support for our U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices (ICE) and the many federal and state officers who assist them.”  This small number shows the hesitancy and resistance to immigration restrictions by the Democratic party.

Thomas is another individual who believes the Democrats are strategically pushing for the immigrant voting.  In a recent piece, he writes, “Who doubts this is the first step by the left and Democrats toward full voting rights in state and eventually federal elections?  The claim by lawyers will be that it is discriminatory to allow undocumented immigrants to vote in local and state elections and not for members for Congress and for president.  At the bottom, this is what the entire immigration debate is about.”  He continues to say that the Democrat’s goal in all of this is to “import votes.”

Newt Gingrich proposes the idea that Congress should pass a law “reaffirming that you are an American citizen to vote in all American elections.”  Clarification, such as this, would eliminate non-citizens voting in state-specific elections, like those in California.

What is your opinion on this?  Do you think immigrants that are here illegally and are not American citizens should be able to vote in local and/or federal elections? Do you think Democrats are pushing for immigrant votes in order to “import votes” or for other reasons?
