Should Serena Williams' Catsuit Been Banned?
Serena Williams, world renown tennis player, is known for her tight, black “cat suit”. In an interview, she says it makes her feel like a “queen from Wakanda” and has become her trademark. However, the French Tennis Federation, recently released a statement saying that she will no longer be able to wear her outfit for official tennis matches.
The French Tennis Federation made a new dress code with new rules, prohibiting Williams’ cat suit. The President of the French Tennis Federation, Bernard Giudicelli, stated, “I think that sometimes we’ve gone too far. It will no longer be accepted. One must respect the game and the place” in response to Williams’ cat suit.
People.com reached out to Serena Williams and her agent but has not received a comment back. Back in May, Williams was asked about her trademark suit. She said, “I feel like a warrior in it. I’ve always wanted to be a superhero, and it is kind of my way of being a superhero.” In addition to this fashion statement, she also has utilized health benefits from wearing her cat suit. After the birth of her daughter (Alexis Olympia), Williams has experienced serious blood clotting. She said, “I’ve had a lot of problems with my blood clots, God I don’t know how many I’ve had in the past 12 months…I’ve been wearing pants in general a lot when I play so I can keep the blood circulation going.” Hence, there are health reasons for Williams’ outfit choice when she plays tennis.
Although Williams and her representatives have not commented on the dress code regulations from the French Tennis Federation, some are disapproving of these new changes. There is an argument made for their excessive strictness and inability to take into account each player’s comfort and health concerns. By regulating the dress code for the sport, it limits the players’ ability to express themselves in the way they want. Others feel as if this decision is best for the sport as a whole. Tennis is an international sport with many talented and world-renowned players. Some feel as if players’ attire represents and either respects or disrespects the game. Hence, there is definitely a debate on the new legislation.
What do you think? Should Serena Williams’ cat suit have been banned from the sport by the French Tennis Federation’s new dress codes? Is it limiting her freedom of choice and health decisions or not? Can the new dress limitations be seen as sexist? Please weigh in – I would love to hear your thoughts!
