Content belonging to Alex Jones, a far right conspiracy theorist and the owner of InfoWars, has been removed from various Big Tech companies, including Facebook, Youtube, and Apple. In particluar, he is known for claiming that Sandy Hook was staged by actors, which resulted in defamation lawsuits against him. Most recently, Facebook removed the Alex Jones Channel Page, the Alex Jones Page, the Infowars Page and the Infowars Nightly News Page. According to a statement from Facebook, the pages were taken down for repeatedly violating Facebook's content policies. In particular, Facebook stated the pages were removed "for glorifying violence, which violates our graphic violence policy, and using dehumanizing language to describe people who are transgender, Muslims and immigrants, which violates our hate speech policies." Jones can appeal the decision, but if his appeal fails his pages will be permanently deleted. According to Facebook, he had been repeatedly warned regarding his content. Previously, Youtube had removed Jones' main account, which had 2.4 million subscribers.

The actions of these companies have come after increased pressure to crack down on misinformation and fake news, and some have supported the removal of InfoWars as a step in the right direction. Others, however, oppose the removal. Paul Joseph Watson, editor at large of InfoWars, tweeted that Facebook's move was "political censorship" and "a culture war." I personally think that the sites are completely justified in removing Jones' content, since it violates their policies and he recieved warnings before the removal. Although I think that Facebook leans liberal, I don't think this is a targeted attack on conservatives, but rather on obviously fake news. Most conservatives (at least the ones I know) do not agree with Alex Jones on much of anything.

What do you think? Is this a justified removal or an attack on conservative media?
