Personal Politics vs Issue Politics
"Here's to democracy - may we get the government we deserve" Rick Mercer once said. That quote is a modern twist on Ben Franklin's response to a citizen after the Constitutional Convention when asked what kind of government we have, Franklin responded, "A Republic, if you can keep it."
It is widely apparent that in politics today we discuss people and not issues or solutions. Discussion revolves more around what idiotic thing a candidate said one time, what they wore, their hand gesture or nose picking vs the issue or proposed solution. We spend more time making fun of the “other side” as opposed to breaking down the content of the proposals. So now we have the government we deserve, entertainers and their blind followers designed for modern America instead of candidates and news organizations who break-down issues for a curious and analytical populous.
