What exactly is freedom? Who owns the "fruits" of our labors? Is it us? The government? An uninvolved 3rd party? Tocqueville said, echoed by Ronald Reagan, that the belief that government should somehow be the primary recipient of what individual citizens earned was contrary to our founding principles and the God-given rights of men. Argument over this principle has infected nearly every public policy discussion. Compulsory taxation is a reality. Even our Founding Fathers scrapped the Articles of Confederation because the power to tax was so weak, thus weakening our ability to govern as a nation. Does abusing the power to tax, primarily to the detriment of he who earned the revenue, make America exceptional? Or diminish her greatness? Freedom is what makes America great. Economic freedom is at heart of the very definition of liberty.
