James Gunn Fired Over Old Tweets

James Gunn, the director of the popular movies Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2, has been fired from the 3rd Guardians of the Galaxy and any further projects with Disney. Gunn, who has been a harsh critic of Donald Trump, was fired after conservative website The Daily Caller drew attention to old social media posts of his, mainly from 2008-2009. After the posts resurfaced, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn stated Friday that "the offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him."

Gunn has since tweeted out a series of apologies, stating that "many people who have followed my career know, when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor." He claims that is was "very, very different than I was a few years ago" but also that he "understand[s] and accept[s] the business decisions taken today."

I personally think that a semi-offensive tweet from 10 years ago is not a good reason to fire someone, and when I first read the headlines about this I expected to disagree with Gunn's punishment. However, that was not the case here. I've not linked them for good reason, but the tweets in question are disgusting and indefensible. They revolve around jokes about pedophiles, including Gunn himself being a pedophile, and rape, including jokes about being rape and about raping others (including children). Although they were tweeted 10 years ago, Gunn is 51, meaning that he would have been in his 40s when the tweets were posted--that is to say, he cannot claim to be "young and immature" at the time of the posts. I think his actions are inexcusable and he deserves to be held accountable.
