Twitter user NaomiH_Official tweeted on Monday that she had received an offer to intern at NASA, which read "EVERYONE SHUT THE FUCK UP I GOT ACCEPTED FOR A NASA INTERNSHIP." After her tweet, Homer Hickam, who is on the National Space Council and trained the first Japanese astronauts, replied "Language." She responded "Suck my dick and balls I'm working at NASA," to which he replied "And I am on the National Space Council that oversees NASA."
The interaction was quickly screenshotted and went viral, and Naomi's account was soon deleted (by herself). It was also reported that she was swiftly fired from her internship position. Many have blamed Hickam, who came out with a statement saying he only responded "langauge" to her original tweet in order to warn her about potential action from NASA and that he had no role in her firing. Some feel that she was joking around and should not have been fired, while others think her actions were inappropriate. Others have criticized her for interning at NASA without knowing who Hickam is.
I personally think that she made a (costly) mistake and hopefully learned a lesson about professionalism. It's fine to use whatever language you want around your friends etc., but when you are 1) posting something on the internet for everyone to see and 2) representing your place of work, you obviously need to watch your language. I'm sure she is smart if she was originally accepted to intern at NASA, but her actions were stupid in my opinion. What do you think?
